Finely Carved Boxwood Snuff is symbolic of Cupid and LOVE CONQUERS ALL.
A lute on the lid's foreground is joined by the drum, brass instruments and sheet music. The lute represents the magic and power of music. To Shakespeare the sound of the lute had the power to transport the listener into a form of ecstasy. This is perhaps why it came to symbolise love and romance. It's delicate and fleeting sounds also reflect love's transience.

The reverse is ornamented with classic symbols of Cupid, a bow, quiver, an arrow, flaming torch and wreath of roses. The sides are carved with conch shells centered by a scallop shell, symbolic of Venus.
