Discovered Mantelpiece Acquired by Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

After discovering a Neoclassical Caryatid Mantlepiece in a Beacon Hill basement and spending years researching its history, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA) accessioned it to their collection.

New Design Studio

The interior design business now resides on the top floor of the historic Hooper-Lee-Nichols House. It’s the second oldest building in Cambridge and also serves as home to the Cambridge Historical Society, located at 159 Brattle Street.

Age of Wonderment

• Planting my flag in this age of wonderment with our new mascot, inspired by Albrecht Durer’s groundbreaking woodcut c.1515. Our homage to the early age of discovery is epitomized in Durer’s work.
• Without seeing, but upon receiving a letter with description and second-hand sketch of the beast (thought mythological at the time), Durer created a masterpiece using his talent and divine imagination.

2011 – 2014

UpStage

• Presented with the opportunity to acquire assets of a residential real estate staging business at an attractive price, established a home-staging company focused on high-end properties.
• Helped clients create significant amounts of value by achieving sales in a sideways market.
• What I thought of as an amusing sideline, became a full blown operation. Each job was individual, without formula. The furniture I warehoused ranged as broadly as my clothes closet — every style for any season. Pure theatre. The acrobatics of instantly furnishing a home in two days was a perfect outlet for my creative energies. But before I knew it, I was running a moving, storage and logistics business.
• As part of a plan to focus solely on interior design clients, liquidated the business profitably in fall of 2014.

Fast, Cheap & Out of Control

• Props and production work for documentary film by Errol Morris profiling four subjects with extraordinary careers: Dave Hoover, who is a lion tamer; George Mendonça, who created topiaries at Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, including giraffes made out of boxwood; Ray Mendez, a hairless mole-rats expert; and Rodney Brooks, an M.I.T. scientist who has designed bug-like robots.

1997 New England Spring Flower Show

• Invited by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, founded in 1829, to create a vignette for their annual show.
• The Fenway, aka the Emerald Necklace, Designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, inspired the design.

• Production work for Errol Morris’ film, a biographical study of Stephen Hawking, which shares its name with Hawking’s book.

Leon and Harriet Pomerance Auction

• Received international recognition as agent in the sale of furnishings from these distinguished patrons of ancient art.
• The diverse sale included early 20th century masterpieces on paper, Italian Baroque furniture, a Coptic textile, Nakashima, and folk furniture.

Cornelia Van Rensselaer Hartman

• Cornelia, an established mid-century interior designer, was a friend and mentor who helped distinguish New England preferences from Manhattan tastes.
• Acting as agent in sale of her belongings enhanced my appreciation of 18th century American history.

Masterton-Dusenberry Auction

• Purchased the entire contents of the oldest home in Bronxville, New York, a collection assembled by five generations over 150 years.
• This vast collection of original furnishings marked the beginning of a lifelong fascination investigating how houses are used and a love for the Greek Revival period.

• Established a partnership in Cambridge buying & selling antique fine and decorative arts.

• Pursued a more practical education at the New York School of Interior Design.

• Graduated in Florida as valedictorian from Oak Ridge High School, and began pre-med studies.
